The Next Step

Author's Note:  Once again, I haven't blogged in awhile. BUT I AM BACK!! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I am, when I'm not suffering at work. I also wrote ANOTHER REVIEW for one of my favorite shows!! READ IT. ENJOY IT! #selfpromotion Every time I've had a job, I've always thought about what the "next step" is. I was always worried about working somewhere that was unpaid, having a job that would end soon, or just FLAT OUT HATING my job and wanting to apply elsewhere so I can leave. This is the first time I actually don't have to worry about that, which is relaxing and terrifying at the same time. This week especially, my job has been pissing me off so much. The newbie rose-colored glasses have FINALLY worn off and I'm starting to become irritated by everything and everyone. Is it me just being in a mood/time of the month, my general attitude, or am I actually having valid feelings? Who the fuck even knows. First of all, my boss i...

Grow Up, Grow Apart

Image
Author's Note: I know I haven't written in awhile. I've been tired/unmotivated. But I have a great topic that's #REAL and not as deep. So here goes... The one thing about adulthood that everyone can agree on is that it's fucking HARD to make friends. I'm not gonna sit here and sulk about how I don't have many friends because it's always kind of been that way. The first friend I remember having was from summer camp. We were friends during camp but once camp was over, we hung out one time (our moms exchanged numbers) and she came to my birthday party and that was it. I had another friend that I met in first grade and we were friends up until freshman year of high school (minus our falling out in fifth grade). To this day, if someone asks me who my "best friend" is, I would say she was because even though we're not friends anymore, she was the best friend I ever had. After our falling out, we weren't on bad terms or anything, we k...

Not-So-Humble Beginnings

Image
Author's Note: So it's been a hectic week. Some CRAZY things happened. I wrote not one, but TWO articles. For BWW, I wrote a REVI EW  and last minute my editor emailed me about an INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY WITH ACE [FUCKING] YOUNG!!! So, I got to email him interview questions and he answered them and now it's online!! It still hasn't hit me. I wish I got to meet him, but I'm still so grateful. It makes me think back to just four years ago when I thought I'd never make it. Now I have a lot of hope and I'm so glad. When I think about what my "first job" was, it's such a vague term. It could be my first paying job when I worked as a camp counselor at 15, or the job I have now, which is the first job in my field that is consistent, stable, and has benefits. But my first internship out of college was an unpaid, remote internship for an independent film production company in NYC. I had interviewed via Skype, and got the job but always had a weird ...

Four years out.

Image
Four years ago, I graduated college. I can't believe it. In the amount of time I've been a post-grad, someone else has completed their entire college experience. It's weird. Even though graduations are a happy occasion, the whole day for me was just strange. I don't know if it was because I wanted to leave so badly, or because I had such an interesting, non-traditional college experience. The main things I remember about that day were : - having anxiety the whole time (OF COURSE) - taking a picture with the other seniors in my co-ed service fraternity - waiting in line to walk out to the ceremony - sitting in the heat in a tent on a folding chair in between two girls I had met in two separate classes just a few months ago (because I had no other friends to sit with) - walking across the stage when they called my name (which was a COMPLETE BLUR) and seeing my professors sitting in the front row - my family members screaming my name in the corner of the gym -...

Separation Anxiety

Author's Note: Once again, I'm deciding to share a very personal topic for this article. I've gotten positive responses in the past, and I'm so grateful to my readers for respecting my choice to share this. Recently, my mom told me a story about when I was in preschool and I used to scream and cry at the door because I didn't want her to leave. Sometimes, she would even pick me up early. Last week, she and my dad left for a 2-week cruise to Europe. I thought I was going to be fine, but my anxiety reared its ugly head at 2am on Monday while I was sleeping. I woke up and started to panic about them being safe and if their plane landed and if I was going to be okay. Let's just say, it was a rough week. It took me a few days to be able to eat and sleep normally again. I even considered calling my doctor to figure out why I was feeling this way. I feel okay right now, much better than I did earlier in the week. I'm still a little sad but I know in one mor...

What does it mean to be in a “good place”?

Image
In this day and age, people on social media like to brag about their lives. It is a disease. I've seen so many posts saying "I'm in such a 'GOOD PLACE'." What does that even mean? Is it getting engaged? Married? Buying a new car/house/pet? Getting your "dream job"? I would like to think that I'm in a good place now because I haven't been for the past three years. I was stuck in a dark tunnel waiting for the light, and it mostly had to do with my unsuccessful job search. Then, when the skies finally opened up I was blessed with a day job and  a side gig. Now, I've been lucky in my life in some ways and unlucky in others. I'm not one to brag but I fucking deserve every good thing that happens to me.  While having a job does make me happier in some ways, it fucks with my emotions in others. Usually I would cry and complain about previous jobs I've had constantly (because let's face it, they sucked) but I've been pret...

Embracing The Side Hustle

Image
In every job I've had, I've felt so inauthentic in a way. When I was doing unpaid internships, I had to keep applying to other jobs because I wasn't getting paid. When I was in retail, I was looking for another job because I hated retail. The other two jobs I've had were temporary which explains itself. This is the first time where I feel settled in a job without worrying about the next thing, if there even is one at all. Because I had months of unemployment, I applied to be a BroadwayWorld Contributing Editor without knowing when I would get an actual paying job. I figured if I had another job I hated that much,  at least I would have BroadwayWorld. Little did I know it would become my "side hustle." Let's face it, no one's job is great. At the end of the day, a job is a JOB. Some jobs can be fulfilling, but not everyone's job is life-changing and that's okay. My day job is sitting in a cubicle from 9-5 answering calls and emails and pl...
