Baby's First Gala

Image
gala (noun): a social occasion with special entertainments or performances. Two weeks ago, I went to my first gala (see definition above), which was a huge deal for me. I had never been to one of these events before and had no idea what to expect. In addition to that, I would be going alone since the theater wasn't able to offer me two tickets because of producing fees (whatever that means). I was a new journalist. I had done an interview with the STAR of the gala, Laura Benanti. I didn't know if I would be meeting her that night (SPOILER ALERT: I DIDN'T. I WASN'T VIP. But it's okay). This event meant a lot. I LOVE Laura and admire her work so much. I had done a few articles for the theater as well, so it made me feel even more of a connection. I bought a new outfit and everything. Let me tell you: going to events alone is WEIRD. I HATE IT. Some people love it, which is fine, but I don't. I walked into the performing arts center and literally everyone ...

My Foot In The Door

Image
It's been a crazy few weeks. I had a talk with my sister recently about her own job; next steps, etc. and she said, "I'm going to take my career into my own hands." That really stuck with me. I got the chance to interview THE LAURA BENANTI, WHO IS A BROADWAY STAR (link HERE ).  Laura will be performing at a gala next Saturday at the theater I write reviews for and I'm excited because I've seen her live twice; at Build Series and on Broadway in "She Loves Me." I may or may not meet her after the concert and I'm freaking out. I saw an opportunity, reached out to the PR lady, and made it happen. I constantly have this fire inside me to take risks and pursue opportunities that will help me in the long run and I did. I am so happy to have achieved something like this, but I was sad yesterday for some reason. The article got lot of buzz on Facebook (mostly because my mom shared it and her friends on there always like/comment on things), and it was...

This Is 27.

Image
This is it. Another year has come and gone. I'm now 27, aka 3 years away from 30. *CRINGE* Getting older terrifies me. It scares me. I don't want to get older. Birthdays are HARD. Most people enjoy them but it brings on a lot of sadness and mixed emotions for me. It makes me reflect on my life a lot. I have to say, this year has been pretty good to me. The first half of it sucked, but I finally got my shit together (sort of). I got a full-time job and I found a passion outside of my job in BroadwayWorld. This little freelance gig that I thought I'd take on because I thought I'd have some kind of part-time temp job that I hated and needed another outlet, but it ended up not working out anyway. I took on something that I wasn't sure if I liked or not and found real fulfillment in it. I realized that I wanted to be a writer all along but maybe I just didn't know it yet. I'm finally able to say that I want to write about theater and entertainment and I won...

The 5-Month Stretch

Image
Author's Note:   It's been ANOTHER MONTH, sorry. I keep forgetting to write in this thing. I'm going to self-promote because I wrote ANOTHER REVIEW AGAIN! Totally last minute, but it's one more thing to put on my portfolio! When you first get a new job, you feel like you're on top of the world. Everything is great. You're making money. It's all new to you. What could go wrong? Then, a few months in you CRASH. That's what happened to me. All of the cracks became deeper and deeper. I was in a black hole. A string of events just kept piling up and so did the work and I hit a wall. My boss was being a bitch, I sit next to this guy and another woman who are so fucking annoying, and I was so frustrated with this job I couldn't stand going in another day. I even considered walking out one day at around 3pm and not going back. I had anxiety and depression for about a day and a half. I thought about quitting. Sometimes you're in such a dark place t...

The Next Step

Image
Author's Note:  Once again, I haven't blogged in awhile. BUT I AM BACK!! I hope everyone is enjoying their summer. I am, when I'm not suffering at work. I also wrote ANOTHER REVIEW for one of my favorite shows!! READ IT. ENJOY IT! #selfpromotion Every time I've had a job, I've always thought about what the "next step" is. I was always worried about working somewhere that was unpaid, having a job that would end soon, or just FLAT OUT HATING my job and wanting to apply elsewhere so I can leave. This is the first time I actually don't have to worry about that, which is relaxing and terrifying at the same time. This week especially, my job has been pissing me off so much. The newbie rose-colored glasses have FINALLY worn off and I'm starting to become irritated by everything and everyone. Is it me just being in a mood/time of the month, my general attitude, or am I actually having valid feelings? Who the fuck even knows. First of all, my boss i...

Grow Up, Grow Apart

Image
Author's Note: I know I haven't written in awhile. I've been tired/unmotivated. But I have a great topic that's #REAL and not as deep. So here goes... The one thing about adulthood that everyone can agree on is that it's fucking HARD to make friends. I'm not gonna sit here and sulk about how I don't have many friends because it's always kind of been that way. The first friend I remember having was from summer camp. We were friends during camp but once camp was over, we hung out one time (our moms exchanged numbers) and she came to my birthday party and that was it. I had another friend that I met in first grade and we were friends up until freshman year of high school (minus our falling out in fifth grade). To this day, if someone asks me who my "best friend" is, I would say she was because even though we're not friends anymore, she was the best friend I ever had. After our falling out, we weren't on bad terms or anything, we k...

Not-So-Humble Beginnings

Image
Author's Note: So it's been a hectic week. Some CRAZY things happened. I wrote not one, but TWO articles. For BWW, I wrote a REVI EW  and last minute my editor emailed me about an INTERVIEW OPPORTUNITY WITH ACE [FUCKING] YOUNG!!! So, I got to email him interview questions and he answered them and now it's online!! It still hasn't hit me. I wish I got to meet him, but I'm still so grateful. It makes me think back to just four years ago when I thought I'd never make it. Now I have a lot of hope and I'm so glad. When I think about what my "first job" was, it's such a vague term. It could be my first paying job when I worked as a camp counselor at 15, or the job I have now, which is the first job in my field that is consistent, stable, and has benefits. But my first internship out of college was an unpaid, remote internship for an independent film production company in NYC. I had interviewed via Skype, and got the job but always had a weird ...
