Four years out.

Image
Four years ago, I graduated college. I can't believe it. In the amount of time I've been a post-grad, someone else has completed their entire college experience. It's weird. Even though graduations are a happy occasion, the whole day for me was just strange. I don't know if it was because I wanted to leave so badly, or because I had such an interesting, non-traditional college experience. The main things I remember about that day were : - having anxiety the whole time (OF COURSE) - taking a picture with the other seniors in my co-ed service fraternity - waiting in line to walk out to the ceremony - sitting in the heat in a tent on a folding chair in between two girls I had met in two separate classes just a few months ago (because I had no other friends to sit with) - walking across the stage when they called my name (which was a COMPLETE BLUR) and seeing my professors sitting in the front row - my family members screaming my name in the corner of the gym -...

Separation Anxiety

Author's Note: Once again, I'm deciding to share a very personal topic for this article. I've gotten positive responses in the past, and I'm so grateful to my readers for respecting my choice to share this. Recently, my mom told me a story about when I was in preschool and I used to scream and cry at the door because I didn't want her to leave. Sometimes, she would even pick me up early. Last week, she and my dad left for a 2-week cruise to Europe. I thought I was going to be fine, but my anxiety reared its ugly head at 2am on Monday while I was sleeping. I woke up and started to panic about them being safe and if their plane landed and if I was going to be okay. Let's just say, it was a rough week. It took me a few days to be able to eat and sleep normally again. I even considered calling my doctor to figure out why I was feeling this way. I feel okay right now, much better than I did earlier in the week. I'm still a little sad but I know in one mor...

What does it mean to be in a “good place”?

Image
In this day and age, people on social media like to brag about their lives. It is a disease. I've seen so many posts saying "I'm in such a 'GOOD PLACE'." What does that even mean? Is it getting engaged? Married? Buying a new car/house/pet? Getting your "dream job"? I would like to think that I'm in a good place now because I haven't been for the past three years. I was stuck in a dark tunnel waiting for the light, and it mostly had to do with my unsuccessful job search. Then, when the skies finally opened up I was blessed with a day job and  a side gig. Now, I've been lucky in my life in some ways and unlucky in others. I'm not one to brag but I fucking deserve every good thing that happens to me.  While having a job does make me happier in some ways, it fucks with my emotions in others. Usually I would cry and complain about previous jobs I've had constantly (because let's face it, they sucked) but I've been pret...

Embracing The Side Hustle

Image
In every job I've had, I've felt so inauthentic in a way. When I was doing unpaid internships, I had to keep applying to other jobs because I wasn't getting paid. When I was in retail, I was looking for another job because I hated retail. The other two jobs I've had were temporary which explains itself. This is the first time where I feel settled in a job without worrying about the next thing, if there even is one at all. Because I had months of unemployment, I applied to be a BroadwayWorld Contributing Editor without knowing when I would get an actual paying job. I figured if I had another job I hated that much,  at least I would have BroadwayWorld. Little did I know it would become my "side hustle." Let's face it, no one's job is great. At the end of the day, a job is a JOB. Some jobs can be fulfilling, but not everyone's job is life-changing and that's okay. My day job is sitting in a cubicle from 9-5 answering calls and emails and pl...

The Twilight Zone

Author's Note:  I know I haven't written in over a MONTH, I'm sorry! I've been trying to adjust to my new full-time job (WHICH MAKES ME TIRED ALL THE TIME) and coming off the high of writing my first review for my freelance gig. OH YEAH, I WROTE A REVIEW. PLEASE READ IT  HERE . IT WAS IN THE "HOT STORIES" SECTION FOR A HOT SECOND! I'll be writing my second review next weekend!!! This next topic is really hard for me to write about. I haven't actually been able to talk about it in writing for a long time. So please respect the fact that I'm going to write about this very dark, still difficult thing that happened to me. I feel liberated to finally be able to talk about it now that I'm in a much better place. In January 2018, my life was finally made when I was able to quit my retail job and move on to a full-time job in NYC as an Administrative Assistant for a healthcare communications company through a recruiter/temp agency. It was listed...

"Fake It 'til You Make It" (Or Don't): The Worst Job Interview I've Ever Had

Image
Let's face it, we've all had some pretty terrible job interviews. In my case, I've had a lot. But there was one in particular that I will NEVER forget. It was in fall 2017, I interviewed for an entry-level Production Coordinator position at a publishing company in NYC that makes tourist guides. I worked really hard  to prepare for this interview. To be honest, I didn't necessarily want  the job, but I wanted to get the HELL out of retail and the job description didn't seem so bad. I felt like I was pretty capable and qualified for it. I met with a hiring manager, and I thought the interview went pretty well. She didn't ask me anything that was too hard, and I answered the questions in the best way I could. The conversation seemed to flow. Then, she had me meet with the CEO. That's when things took a left turn. I walked into his office and immediately felt intimidated. He asked me a few questions, which I honestly don't remember. The only question ...

Work vs. Passion: Do we ever find our TRUE calling?

Image
"Do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life." Many of us have heard this quote before. I am a true believer in it, but it can be hard to separate work from passion when it comes to your career path. While working at my camp job this summer, I was talking to one of my co-counselors (who was also my former camper) about to enter into her freshman year of college. She was planning to go to a general liberal arts school to study nursing. I remember having an intense, deep conversation with her while we were on one of our beach trips standing in the ocean. "Nursing isn't really what I want  to do," she said, "I wanted to go to a school in NYC to study Fashion Merchandising. I got in, but it was too expensive and I can't afford it." This made me sad. Not only for her, but for the Millennial generation and future younger generations after us. It's so hard to get any  job these days, let alone a "dream job," so most...
